About
Biography
I was born in southern California the middle of five children. I loved to camp in the mountains and swim in the ocean. We moved to central Minnesota to be closer to family and I finished up grade school and high school there.
I graduated from the University of St. Thomas, St. Paul, MN with a degree in Mathematics and Air Force ROTC studies and a concentration in Physics, Computer Science and Music.
I met my wife in college while singing in the college choir and started dating after singing at a fellow choir members wedding. We married one year after college while I was in the Air Force and we moved to New Hampshire.
I Entered the Air Force after college and became a weather officer. Remember Tom Clancy’s book “Red Storm Rising” The weather officer character was me.
After the Air Force we moved back to Minnesota to raise our growing family and I become a software engineer.
I became a Christian in 1993 through the ministry of KTIS Christian radio and the Holy Spirit. I have always been interested in issues of faith and belief and that is what you will find frequently discussed in this blog.
As a Minnesota based photographer and artist, Wayne focuses his skills and energies on landscapes, cityscapes, architectural, nature and portrait photography.
His best work comes from images first painted in his mind. He mulls over a prospective image for weeks or months, seeing it from different angles and perspectives, then finally deciding what to capture, he takes action. The result is images that deeply touch a person’s emotions and powerfully evoke memories and dreams.
His images are used commercially by companies and organizations ranging from Financial Services firms, mom and pop Ice Cream shops and The Basilica of St Mary. The images are used to communicate their shared vision and values. Book, magazine and calendar publishers have featured his images in their publications and on their covers. His photographs also grace and enhance the décor of many fine homes.
Memorial Day 2011

Remembering the Fallen, Caring for Those Left Behind. Freedom is not Free.
Image from Fort Snelling National Cemetery , Minneapolis MN.
“Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday that is observed on the last Monday of May (observed this year on 2007-05-28). It was formerly known as Decoration Day. This holiday commemorates U.S. men and women who have died in military service to their country. It began first to honor Union soldiers who died during the American Civil War. After World War I, it expanded to include those who died in any war or military action. One of the longest standing traditions is the running of the Indianapolis 500, which has been held in conjunction with Memorial Day since 1911.”

How to convert a Typepad.com blog to a WordPress blog
I have been blogging for a very long time at the Questions and Answers blog www.qandablog.com that is hosted via typepad.com. But I have known for a very long time that,
1. I wanted to be working in WordPress, the most popular Content Management System (CMS) in the world, so that I can easily help my clients with their web pages and blogs etc
2. From a Search Engine Optimization (SEO) perspective, it is much better to be blogging at your main domain, in this case www.waynemoran.com so that you are driving traffic to your domain and not the generic typepad.com domain.
So yesterday I realized that my hosting company (www.gate.com ) had all three of the top blogging engines available in the easy scripts section of the web site. They have Drupal, Joomla, and WordPress and as I have been talking with a client recently who has a need for Moodle, which is a CMS for educational provider websites, I realized my provider has that tool also.
Anyway, I decided to turn on WordPress for my sight. That process was easy but then I immediately broke out in a cold sweet thinking how in the world am I going to get all my content from my last blog over to this new blog? I woke up at 3:30 last night thinking, yes worrying about this. Gosh there has to be a way to convert this. So early this morning I ran off to Google and searched for “convert from typepad to wordpress” and shazam I found this awesome post from www.blogstrategies.net
http://www.blogstrategies.net/2009/01/28/import-typepad-to-wordpress/
So I went to my Typepad blog and logged in.
I went to the help page http://www.typepad.com/account/help and searched for export which points you to this page http://help.typepad.com/import_export.html and under the Export Section I found this little point
To create an export file, go to Blogs > Settings > Import/Export and scroll down to the Export section. Click the Export button to generate the export file.
I saved the file locally as mt- export.txt. This is important for later. Then I ftp uploaded this file to my new blog directory on my web host under the new directory wp-content.
In the article above it says to
“Next, sign-in to WordPress, click Tools in the left sidebar and Import. Select Movable Type/Typepad. Choose the second option for importing – “Or use mt-export.txt in your /wp-content/directory.” Click Import, and give WordPress a few moments to do its magic, and import and convert the data.”
Well, being I am on a slightly newer version of WordPress things are a little bit different. When you go to the Import menu on the left of the form you 1st have to install the import script or at least I did in my environment. I selected
Movable Type and TypePad: Import posts and comments from a Movable Type or TypePad blog.
When I did that, it gave me a warning that this script as not been tested with this newer version of WordPress so I stopped for a moment. But being the intrepid developer that I am I decided to continue on. Once it is installed you get to choose to upload a file from your computer or import mt-export.txt. This is where the ftp file from above is important. I selected this second option and off it goes.
In a minute or so I get the message Converted 1279 posts. Wow, now this is awesome! It has saved me hundreds of hours.
You can see the results here http://www.waynemoran.com/blog2/
Now I still need to work on the design and make sure it is getting into Google and all that but to know that I have quickly converted the content is a huge miracle.
So thanks for the info and happy blogging!!
Of course I had to do this in HDR also. 🙂

Use your color histogram to correct your white balance
Have you ever noticed that when you are shooting an image, you look at the image on your screen on your camera and you notice right away that the colors do not look right? You know, they are too blue or too red or whatever. Yes you can run into this situation even when you are shooting with a camera that has a great auto white balance setting. As you get more and more careful with the quality of your images and when you want to capture super high quality images the first time so that you can limit post production edits. So how do you fix this color issue which is a white balance issue?
Did you know you can use your color histogram on your camera to help you set white balance very close to perfect every time. To do this I recommend that you actually figure out how to manually set the custom white balance setting on your camera. Hold on now, it really is easy. Most cameras have an auto setting and then several settings for situations weather that be indoor lighting, cloudy etc. But, most cameras also have a custom setting that allows you to set the temperature of the light that you are shooting. Honest, this really is easy, you just need to play with it just a little bit and make it part of your workflow so that you do it every time you are shooting or at least every time you want to be perfect.
Take a gray card or some neutral color object and capture a shot of the grey card. Now, look at your histogram for the image. You can see a spike in the red, green and blue histograms when you shoot this gray card. If the spike in all the three histograms is at the same place, then the image is neutral and the color temperature is set correctly. Otherwise, you will need to adjust the custom color temperature setting for your camera. Yes you can also set to one of the built in white balance settings in your camera and you will get a close approximation of the correct color temperature for the lighting situation. For example, if the blue channel is much towards highlights, then the scene is too much bluish and you should adjust the color temperature or white balance accordingly.
See that is all that there is to it, simple right? Your colors should be much closer to perfect from here on out.
I would appreciate your feedback on this article and ideas for other articles in the future.
Happy shooting
Stone Arch Bridge Magazine Cover
I was contacted by one of the editors of a national magazine, the Journal of Managed Care Pharmacy the monthly journal for The Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy because they wanted to use my Minneapolis Stone Arch Bridge image as the cover of their magazine for an upcoming issue. That was flattering enough but then they told me they were going to be doing an About the Artist page in the magazine. Well I got to see what they were putting together today and I was blown away. I am even blushing. This is a huge honor for me!

One of the all time best shots.. 🙂
This is a fun shot that gave me an opportunity to work with all the kids. Even the neighbor kids got involved.
The genesis of a picture: This picture originated from a discussion with another flickrite Wans2pics . We were talking about how to do a portrait of a male well. She came up with the idea that it could be an action shot or some shot were the guy was going the thing that he loved. So while this is no longer a portrait, it is a male action shot. There Wanda, the picture is up!!!
How is this done? Take 10 million pictures of a ball coming in and sort through them…lol Or…
Note: Bigger view is now available.

The Landmark Center is one of the most recognizable buildings in Minnesota not to mention St Paul, Minnesota. The building has a great history and it is still being used in many interesting ways.
St. Paul’s historic Landmark Center, completed in 1902, originally served as the United States Post Office, Court House, and Custom House for the state of Minnesota. It was designed by Willoughby J. Edbrooke, who served as Supervising Architect of the U.S. Treasury Department in 1891-92. Edbrooke designed a body of public architecture, much of which, like this structure, was completed after his death in 1896. Landmark Center stands in beautiful Rice Park, now housing an arts and culture center for St. Paul.

Mickey's Diner is a 50' x 10' classic Art Deco diner car restaurant in Saint Paul, Minnesota. It was prefabricated in New Jersey by the Jerry O'Mahony Diner Company of Elizabeth, New Jersey, in 1937 serial # 1067, shipped to Saint Paul by rail, and installed downtown just before World War II. It looks much like it did then and is still open 24 hours a day (and according to its employees, non-stop since it started). It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983 as the only building of its kind in Minnesota. It is shown in several Hollywood movies, including The Mighty Ducks, Jingle All the Way, and A Prairie Home Companion, where it is featured prominently in the opening and closing scenes.
There is an additional location in the West 7th/Sibley neighborhood of Saint Paul that is decorated in the manner of a 1950s diner rather than the factory manufactured diners of the Great Depression and the Second World War. The West 7th/Sibley neighborhood location is under different management.
