Last night my wife and I went to the newly released movie End of the Spear. It is basically the story of 5 missionaries that are speared to death in the Jungles of Equador by the Amazon river by members of the Waodani tribe, but that is only the beginning of the story.
These missionaries were attempting to communicate with these brutal people. The five men knew the work was very dangerous but they chose to do it any way.
While the movie itself is not a technically perfect movie it is certainly very good from a technical level. The real power of the movie comes from the story itself. The story is told by the son of one of the men that were speared to death. Who with his mother and several other wifes of the men that were speared decide to go in an live with these very superstitious people.
The story is such a powerful story of courage, grace, love and redemption. To me, this is a movie of a generation. Not only because it is well done, but because it is true.
This is a must see movie!!!!
End of the Spear
Oh Wayne, I knew I could count on you guys! Your blog is my fourth visit and no one had said anything about it! I was getting very nervous. Was your theatre full? Ours was not a great crowd.
I’m so, so glad you wrote about it. Christians could unite in supporting this, and the quality of the film leaves no excuse. It IS NOT something you will need to endure…it IS GOOD!
End of the Spear, Start of an Era
Finally. A quality film that stands on its own without a saccharin morality play to cheapen its appeal. This strategically narrated drama is a move in the right direction for movies broadly – and unfortunately – catagorized as “inspirational.” With …
Interesting review Wayne – I haven’t seen it yet but I’ve read some good reviews from people who take the movie on it’s merits. Good to see that here too.
