Hugh is in anguish bout the Mier’s withdrawal. Story at NYTimes.
David Frum in The National Review Online celebrates the Mier’s withdrawal.
The Mier’s withdrawal from the Supreme Court nomination shows one thing very clearly. It shows that the fear and dread of the left is to totally unfounded.
From the left we constantly hear stories that George W. Bush is an evil all powerful president. But this situation shows this idea is clearly unfound. George Bush could not get his judicial nomination through the selection process. This points out clearly that the president has much less power than most people think he does. In fact the president is not even in control of the political party that generally supports.
I also believe this in the shows that conservatives do indeed yield very significant power in the political realm. What this means is conservatives have to be held accountable in all areas of political influence. This means in the area spending in the area of policy and the area of judicial selections.
I have been pretty silent on the whole Mier’s selection process because I was waiting for the system to work but I must say on this one I lean more towards David Frum’s position. Isn’t political discourse fun?
