BLACK REPUBLICAN GRASSROOTS ORGANIZATION SUPPORTS JUDGE ROBERTS
Washington, D.C. –September 1, 2005 – The National Black Republican Association (NBRA) announced its support of the nomination of Judge John Roberts to fill the current vacancy on the U. S. Supreme Court. Judge Roberts is an extremely qualified nominee who has earned a well qualified rating from the American Bar Association; the highest recommendation the organization gives. The NBRA urges the swift confirmation of Judge Roberts by the United States Senate.
"The civil rights record of Judge Roberts shows that his beliefs and legal actions are supportive of the rights of African Americans," said Frances Rice, the NBRA Chairman.
While a practicing attorney, Judge Roberts participated in a program sponsored by the Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs that helps to prepare entering first year law students from disadvantaged or traditionally under-represented backgrounds. A further indication of Judge Roberts’ concern for the rights of African Americans is the fact that he argued a case, without compensation, before the D.C. Court of Appeals on behalf of welfare recipients who challenged the termination of benefits under the District of Columbia’s 1982 Public Assistance Act.
"Judge Roberts’ outstanding record on civil rights is publicly available for anyone who wishes to know the truth," said Andre Cadogan, another NBRA officer, “His opponents are simply trying to distort the record of this talented jurist.”
