ADF Comes to the Defense of Pro-Life Nurse in Louisiana…

Several years ago, ADF and its allies successfully defended the employment rights of a pro-life nurse in Illinois who faced termination for refusing to assist in abortions at the hospital in which she was employed.

Now a similar case with alarming ramifications for the right of conscience of pro-life individuals has arisen in Louisiana, and ADF is once again coming to the defense of a nurse who was terminated for refusing to administer the bizarrely named “morning after” abortion pill.

Toni Lemly informed hospital supervisory staff at St. Tammany Parish Hospital that she could not issue the pill because of her sincerely held religious beliefs.  The hospital fired her from her full-time position.  Lemly was demoted to part-time status, resulting in a substantial reduction of pay as well as the loss of employee benefits.

ADF attorney Mike Johnson, with allied attorneys Brian Arabie and Warren Montgomery, has come to her defense, filing a lawsuit against the hospital for terminating her employment.  You can read the petition at www.telladf.org/UserDocs/LemlyPFD.pdf.

Mike says: “This case is about the protection of freedom of conscience.  The hospital’s refusal to make a reasonable accommodation for Ms. Lemly’s sincerely held religious beliefs and their termination of her full-time job is unlawful…she should not be discriminated against because of her faith. All that she asks of the hospital is to respect her freedom in choosing to not participate in the taking of a human life.”

ADF and its allies will continue to defend the right for individuals to freely live and proclaim their faith in case after case, court after court.  We will keep you posted on the progress of this case in the weeks and months ahead.

About waynem

As a Minnesota based photographer and artist I have been greatly influenced by the Upper Midwest. I focus my skills and energies on portraits, landscapes, cityscapes, architectural and fine art work. My best work comes from images first painted in my mind. I mull over a prospective image for weeks or months, seeing it from different angles and perspectives, then finally deciding what to capture. The result is images that deeply touch people's emotions and powerfully evoke memories and dreams. My images are used commercially by companies and organizations ranging from Financial Services firms, mom and pop Ice Cream shops and The Basilica of St Mary to communicate their shared vision and values. Book and magazine publishers have featured my images on their covers. My photographs also grace and enhance the decor of many fine homes.

  1. Crystal says:

In situations like this one, I don’t understand why the other staff members don’t just say something like “Ok, we’ll have so-and-so administer this instead.”
    Is it so difficult? -sighs-
