This week in Washington I had the opportunity to work on legislation which empowers parents to carry out the important work of raising their children.
On Tuesday I joined my colleagues in passing a bill which will make it easier for parents to select the entertainment materials viewed by their children. A DVD filtering technology which allows viewers to automatically delete or mute profanity and graphic scenes when they watch a DVD – without altering its content – is currently subject to copyright infringement lawsuits. Several movie studios argue distribution of the altered films violates artists’ First Amendment rights. The legislation we passed releases the filter technology from copyright lawsuits, providing parents with a tool to help them raise their children in the way they think is best.
Also this week, I introduced legislation which protects parents from being forced to medicate their children in order to attend school. A growing number of schools across the country are forcing parents to place their children on psychotropic – or behavior altering – drugs in order to receive educational services. Parents should never have to choose between their child’s health and safety and their ability to receive an education. That is why I introduced the Child Medication Safety Act. This legislation calls on states to establish policies that prohibit school personnel from forcing parents to medicate their children. I am hopeful this bill will protect the rights of parents to decide for themselves what is best for their children.
