03/18/2005: "Torture the Innocent"

Perhaps it is torture forcing her to continue to live. Forcing her to live in a persistent vegetative state for someones' political, ideological, and religious agenda. Perhaps she is indeed being treated like a terrorist.

Perhaps you are ignorant of the situation; she is not in a "persistent vegetative state". She is alert and responsive. Either way, it matters little all innocent human life is worth saving. They are not using any heroic measures to keep her alive, just food and water. "Whatsoever you do to the least of these, you do onto me." A decent society cares for the most vulnerable. BTW Michael Schiavo should have lost any right's to making decisions for his "wife" after he committed adultery and fathered two children.

What would you say if she had clearly indicated prior to the onset of her condition that she did not wish to be kept alive in situations like this, i.e., she could only be kept alive via feeding tubes, and doctors had testified (which they have) that she is in a persistent vegetative state? Before you answer, note that we have a right to refuse medical service, and if the state can force medical service upon us, then what does that say?

That is not the situation we are dealing with, and again feeding tubes are not heroic measures.
If there was clear written documentation as to her requests like a living will and heroic measures were required to keep her alive, like heart machines or breathing machines then she could be allowed to die.
In this case they would be starving her just like if they stopped feeding and watering you, you would be tortured and die.

What do you think about this?

For most of human history, death typically came prematurely," said Mike Kearl, chairman of the department of sociology and anthropology at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, who for a quarter-century has taught a course on death and dying.
However, in modern society, "we're haunted by the fact that instead of dying prematurely, we might die post-maturely."
Even though Schiavo "has become a battleground, a notorious case in the history of ethics and law, I don't think it's going to change how we think about the right to die," Caplan said. "People are overwhelmingly terrified of being trapped by technology in a state like Terri's."
And this? said @ 03/18/2005 03:07 PM CST
"incredible organized campaign of vilification" sounds a bit biased to me.
Michael has proven to be of very low character. The Schiavo family has not.
Remember he won a 1 million dollar award for her original injury to care for her. He has blown most of that money. He has fathered two children while married and "caring" for Terri.
That does not sound like love to me.

Hmmm...nice to know that when your quality of life is reduced to blinking your eyes, being tube-fed liquid goop that would make a billy-goat puke, and thrice daily hygenic changes from Nurse Ratchet, your government will do everything in its power to keep you that way.
And this is what you beleive is right? said @ 03/18/2005 03:35 PM CST
It is obvious we come from two very different worldviews. You will do everything in your power to belittle the value of each and every innocent human life and I will do everything I can to even see value in the least of these. You start a society thinking like you do and you end up with Hitler's eugenics labs where noone is safe. So who is next grey headed people, short people, grumpy people?
Q and A Blogger said @ 03/18/2005 09:27 PM CST
Guess you pulled out all the big guns on that one. BTW: I am grey headed, and I am grumpy. I am not short. I do not belittle the value of anyone, and no one is "next". I have seen people dear to me die, die in my arms, I have seen the suffering, and I do not wish it upon anyone. I come from a sympathetic perspective. You might not think so. That is okay, debate can be nasty. This is a highly contentious issue.
